145. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – Summer of ’99 (#137)

1999 was a great year for movies, with a host of massively successful (and cult) hits that would define cinema for a next generation: Being John Malkovich, The Blair Witch Project, Go, Cruel Intentions, American Beauty. The Summer of ’99 season offers a trip through the year in film on the IMDb‘s 250.

Four young men in London find themselves in the middle of an elaborate scheme involving half a million bounds, mountains of marijuana, a shady sex shop proprietor, and two antique shotguns. As the situation rapidly escalates outside of their control, can these four young men keep their heads above water?

At time of recording, it was ranked 137th on the Internet Movie Database‘s list of the best movies of all-time.

It’s February 1969. Everything is changing. Hollywood itself seems to be facing an inevitable collision with the turmoil that has engulfed the rest of the world. Against this backdrop, lives intersect and collide. Returning from the United Kingdom, Sharon Tate moves in next door to washed up fifties western star Rick Dalton, both completely unaware of how profoundly their lives will impact one another.

New Podcast! The Time is Now – Season 1, Episode 13 (“Force Majeure”)

It was a delight to stop by The Time is Now podcast again, particularly so soon after my last appearance on The X-Cast.

This week, I’m joining host and showrunner Kurt North to talk about one of my favourite episodes of the first season and a definite turning point in the evolution of Millennium. Force Majeure is one of the first times in the season that Millennium really lets its freak flag fly high. It is an episode that feels very different and distinct from what came before, eschewing the conventional “serial killer of the week” format in favour of something more abstract and eschatological.

The third installment in the landmark Three Colours trilogy focuses on a strange relationship in mid-nineties Geneva. Valentine is a young student model trying to find direction in her life, who stumbles into the life of a voyeuristic retired judge. The two strike up a strange relationship, discovering just how interconnected their lives are despite the gulf that seems to exist between them.

New Podcast! Scannain Podcast (2019) #23!

It’s time for the Scannain podcast!

This week, I join Grace Duffy and Alex Towers from When Irish Eyes Are Watching to discuss what we watched, the week in film news, the top ten and the new releases. Grace has recently watched The Bling Ring, Alex has seen I Am Cuba, and I have watched the entire Three Colours trilogy.

In terms of film news, the Virgin Media International Film Festival is taking five Irish films to the Shanghai International Film Festival, the Irish Film Institute has launched a fundraising initiative to pay for upgrades to its facilities, and a late-breaking Emmy voting scandal is in the news.

New Podcast! Scannain Podcast (2019) #21!

It’s time for the Scannain podcast!

This week, I’m back hosting and I’m joined by Jay Coyle and Ronan Doyle to discuss the week in film. Ronan is fresh back from the Trish McAdams and “Memory on Screen” seasons at the Irish Film Institute, and so has a lot to cover from Spider to Memento to the work of Terrence Davies. Jay has had a busy week as well, watching The Virgin Suicides, The Childhood of a Leader and Valley of the Dolls. I’ve had a more eclectic week, watching animated versions of lost Doctor Who episodes, Holmes and Watson, and the surreality that is The Lonely Island Presents: The Unauthorised Bash Brothers Experience.

A lot of news this week, including Roman Polanski’s (failed) efforts to sell his latest movie at Cannes, Woody Allen releasing a trailer for A Rainy Day in New York on his personal Facebook, the major studios dealing with the Georgia Abortion ban, Dublin Oldschool arriving on Netflix, and a €3,000 prize on offer at the Galway Film Market in July.

New Podcast! Scannain Podcast (2019) #19!

It’s time for the Scannain podcast!

This week, I join Jay Coyle, Grace Duffy and Luke Dunne from Film in Dublin to discuss the week in film. Jay has returned from holidays, but has still had the time to take in a variety of films including Steven Spielberg’s remake of War of the Worlds. Grace has enjoyed both Lady Macbeth and Short Term 12. Luke has watched a variety of films including Netflix’s Something Great, which is more like something so-so.

In film news, the Cannes Film Festival is underway. Closer to home, eight Irish film festivals have undertaken the 5050 x 2020 challenge to improve gender representation and transparency in how these festivals are organised and run. Alex Gibney is attending the new DOCS festival in Belfast in June. The Irish Film Institute is hosting their third Dark Skies season focusing on killer artificial intelligences.
