So the trailer for No Time to Die, the new James Bond movie, dropped yesterday.
I wrote a bit about my reaction to it at Escapist Magazine, primarily how I was a little underwhelmed by how generic it all felt. It lacked the strong statement of purpose that defined the trailers for movies like GoldenEye, Casino Royale and Skyfall. It seems to be designed to assure audiences that all the required plot elements are in place, but it never actually makes any strong statements about what the movie is supposed to be.

Did you ever think a movie about an old white British guy saving the world from an Arab with left wing politics (he’s supposed to be another environmental nut, as traditional with the Bond franchise) would have so many *right* wingers shittin’ kittens?
On a more serious note, I think I’d be more impressed with the “acknowledging the passage of time” thing if I’d ever seen the middle of the story. The Craig era jumped straight from “James Bond the brand new agent learning the ropes of the new job” in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace to “James Bond the washed out over-the-hill relic that has to prove he’s still relevant” in Skyfall. We never really got a movie about him in his prime. Admittedly that’s where almost all of the pre-Craig movies take place, but I still would’ve liked to see him do it.
