This is something I was quite surprised to actually learn, as it had been bothering me for quite some time. Anyway, I found an article which handily summates the differences here.

Geeks or nerds? Or both?
For those looking for a quick study guide, geeks are technology-obsessed individuals, for example computer geeks, coding geeks, high definition geeks. On the other hand, nerds are generally book smart or culturally (or subculturally) smart.
And now you know.
