Watch Out for Watchmen: The Ultimate Edition!

We knew it was coming. A solid reason to hold out for Christmas – Warner Brothers has announced the motherlode of Watchmen DVD’s. The Ultimate Edition we’ve known to be coming for a while has been confirmed and – despite Zach Snyder’s protest that it would be a bare-bones set – it looks to be massive. Five disks, all inclusive. To quote the great Keanu Reeves: Woah…

Those paying for The Director's Cut must seem quite blue right now...

Those paying for The Director's Cut must seem quite blue right now...

This information has been confirmed by a flyer inside the Watchmen Special Edition DVD case:

  • Five Disks
  • New Commentary (with artist Dave Gibbons)
  • 2+ Hours of Bonus Content
  • The Complete Motion Comic
  • Mockumentary “Under The Hood”

And I imagine there’s more to be confirmed. It’s odd – I said I wanted a five disk set to match my Blade Runner collection, and I got it. What was striking about that particular special edition was that it included several cuts of the movie. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Ultimate Edition contains the theatrical and director’s cuts as well as the full extended cut. That would be pretty sweet.

Still, as far as advertising goes, there have to be better ways of reaching your target market then telling them – inside the special edition they just paid for – that you have an even more expensive, more complete version of the film coming down the pipeline. You pretty much made them pay for the privilege of invalidating their purchase. I can imagine this might tick quite a few fans off.

As for me, I might rent the film when it comes out and wait to buy the Ultimate Edition when I can. Even the cover artwork looks pretty sweet – significantly sweet than The Director’s Cut artwork. I’d like to collect every version of the film in one place, but I’d just change the title. I like Ultimate Edition, but it perhaps it would be more appropriate to call it an Absolute Edition.

Any takers?
